What is the Basic Theory Test (BTT)?

The Basic Theory Test (BTT) is a mandatory computer-based examination administered by the Traffic Police of Singapore. It tests your understanding of Singapore's traffic rules, road signs, driving regulations, and road safety principles.

Every aspiring driver or motorcyclist in Singapore must pass the BTT before they can apply for a Provisional Driving Licence (PDL) and begin practical driving lessons. It is conducted at all three Driving Centres and the TP Driving Test Centre.

The BTT consists of 50 multiple-choice questions to be completed within 45 minutes. To pass, you must score at least 45 out of 50 (90%). Each question is presented with a scenario or image, and you select the best answer from the options given.

When Should You Take the BTT?

The BTT is the very first step in the Singapore driving licence journey. When you take it depends on the licence class you are applying for.

Class 3 / 3A / 3C (Cars)

Motor car licence

Pass the BTT before starting any practical driving lessons. After passing, you will receive your Provisional Driving Licence (PDL), which allows you to take lessons on Singapore roads with a certified instructor.

Order: BTT → PDL → Practical Lessons → Final Theory Test (FTT) → Practical Driving Test (PDT)

Class 2B (Motorcycles)

Light motorcycle licence

For motorcycles, you must pass the BTT before you can enrol at a driving centre. The BTT is taken before any lessons begin, and you must also take the Basic Theory Test for motorcycles specifically.

Order: BTT → Enrol at CDC/BBDC/SSDC → Practical Lessons → FTT → PDT

BTT Eligibility Criteria

Before booking your BTT, ensure you meet all eligibility requirements set by the Traffic Police of Singapore. These requirements vary slightly depending on the licence class.

PRO TIPS

6 Tips to Pass Your BTT First Time

Most candidates who fail the BTT do so because of inadequate preparation. Follow these tips to maximise your chances of passing on your first attempt.

01
Study the Highway Code

The official Singapore Highway Code is the primary reference for BTT questions. Read it cover to cover, paying special attention to traffic signs, road markings, and right of way rules.

02
Know Your Road Signs Cold

Memorise all categories of road signs: regulatory (red circle), warning (yellow diamond), informational (blue), and directional signs. Misidentifying signs is the most common mistake.

03
Practice with Timed Tests

Use our free practice tests to simulate actual exam conditions. Practising under time pressure (50 questions in 45 minutes) helps you manage time effectively on the real day.

04
Focus on Right of Way Scenarios

Many BTT questions involve complex junction and roundabout scenarios. Study all possible configurations and memorise the priority rules. These questions require careful thinking.

05
Learn the Demerit Point System

Know the number of demerit points for common offences, and the consequences at various thresholds (12, 24 points etc.). These are commonly tested and easy marks to gain.

06
Book Early, Don't Cram

Spread your studying over 1–2 weeks rather than cramming the night before. Take at least 3–5 full practice tests before your actual test date to build confidence and identify weak areas.

Frequently Asked Questions – BTT

Got questions about the Basic Theory Test? Here are the most common questions asked by Singapore driving students.

There is no limit on the number of attempts for the BTT. If you fail, you simply need to book another test slot and pay the $6.50 fee again. However, you must wait for the next available slot, which can be days or weeks depending on availability. Most candidates pass within 1–2 attempts with proper preparation.

No. All reference materials, notes, and electronic devices (including mobile phones) are strictly prohibited inside the examination room. You must rely entirely on your own knowledge. The test is conducted under supervised, closed-book conditions on a dedicated computer terminal.

Your BTT result is generally valid for 2 years from the date of passing. You must obtain your Provisional Driving Licence (PDL) and begin the process of getting your driving licence within this period. If 2 years pass without you completing the process, you may need to retake the BTT.

Bring your original identity document (Singapore NRIC, FIN card, or Passport). No other materials are required or permitted. Arrive at least 15 minutes early to allow time for registration. Wear comfortable clothing as the test room may be air-conditioned.

No, they are different tests. The BTT (Basic Theory Test) covers fundamental traffic rules, road signs, and basic driving regulations. The FTT (Final Theory Test) is taken later in the process and covers more advanced topics like speed and space management, hazard perception, eco-driving, and expressway driving. You must pass both to get your full licence.
