Overview of Singapore Driving Licence Classes

Singapore's driving licences are issued by the Traffic Police (TP) and are class-based – meaning each licence authorises you to drive only specific categories of vehicles. Choosing the right class before you enrol at a driving centre is important, as it determines your training, fees and vehicle restrictions.

All new drivers must first pass the Basic Theory Test (BTT), obtain a Provisional Driving Licence (PDL), complete the required practical lessons, and then pass the final driving test. Most drivers in Singapore start with either Class 3C (automatic cars) or Class 2B (motorcycles).

Light Vehicle Licence Classes (Cars)

Light vehicle classes cover private cars, station wagons, and light goods vehicles. The key decision for most new drivers is between Class 3C (automatic) and Class 3 (manual). Class 3 allows you to drive both manual and automatic vehicles; Class 3C allows automatic only.

Most Popular
3C

Class 3C

Automatic Light Motor Vehicles

Vehicles Automatic cars & vans (up to 3.5T)
Transmission Automatic ONLY
Min. Age 18 years
Tests BTT + FTT + Practical
Restriction Cannot drive manual gearbox
Popularity Very high – recommended for beginners

The most popular starting licence in Singapore. Simpler to learn, faster to qualify, lower stress. Suits the majority of drivers as Singapore traffic is predominantly automatic.

Class 3

Manual Light Motor Vehicles

Vehicles Manual & automatic cars (up to 3.5T)
Transmission Manual AND Automatic
Min. Age 18 years
Tests BTT + FTT + Practical (manual)
Restriction None – can drive all light vehicles
Difficulty Higher – clutch and gear management

Choose Class 3 if you plan to drive manual cars (e.g. sports cars, older vehicles, driving overseas where manual is common). The practical test is more challenging.

3A

Class 3A

Automatic Light Motor Vehicles (Legacy)

Vehicles Automatic cars (older classification)
Transmission Automatic ONLY
Min. Age 18 years
Status Legacy – largely replaced by 3C
New Enrolment Not commonly available – check with ADC

Class 3A was the previous automatic car licence. It has been superseded by Class 3C for new applicants. Existing 3A holders retain their licence.

3CA

Class 3CA

Automatic Light Motor Vehicles (Very Old)

Vehicles Automatic cars (pre-certain registration date)
Status Extremely rare – historical classification

Class 3CA is a historical category for very old vehicles. Almost no new licences are issued under this class. Not relevant for new applicants.

4

Class 4

Light Goods Vehicles / Lorries

Vehicles Lorries, light goods vehicles (>3.5T)
Min. Age 21 years
Prerequisite Must hold Class 3 or 3C licence
Use Case Commercial / logistics drivers
5

Class 5

Buses & Large Passenger Vehicles

Vehicles Buses, coaches, large passenger vehicles
Min. Age 21 years
Prerequisite Must hold Class 3 (or 3C) and Class 4
Use Case Bus drivers, tour coaches

Motorcycle Licence Classes

Singapore uses a progressive motorcycle licensing system. You must start at Class 2B and work your way up. Each step requires holding the previous class for at least one year before upgrading.

2B

The pinnacle of Singapore's motorcycle licensing system. Full Class 2 holders can ride any motorcycle with no engine restrictions – including high-performance superbikes.

Which Licence Class Should I Choose?

Use this decision guide to find the right starting licence class for your situation. Answer each question to narrow down your choice.

Car / Light Vehicle Path
Do you want to drive a manual gearbox car?
YES
Class 3
Manual & automatic. Harder test, more flexibility.
OR
NO (Automatic only)
Class 3C
Recommended for most. Simpler, faster, less stressful.
Recommendation: Start with Class 3C. You can always upgrade to Class 3 later by sitting the full manual practical test.
Motorcycle Path
Are you 16 or 17 years old?
YES (16–17)
Class 2B only
Only option. Must wait until 18 to upgrade to 2A.
OR
NO (18+)
Start at 2B
Then progress: 2B → 2A → 2. Cannot skip steps.
Progression timeline: Class 2B (min. 1 year) → Class 2A (min. 1 year) → Class 2. Minimum 2 years to reach full unrestricted Class 2.

Class 3C vs Class 3 – Side-by-Side Comparison

The most common question among new drivers: Class 3C or Class 3? Here is a direct comparison to help you decide.

Factor Class 3C
Most Popular
Class 3
Manual
Vehicles Covered Automatic cars & vans only Manual AND automatic cars
Gearbox Automatic only Manual & automatic
Minimum Age 18 years 18 years
Test Difficulty Harder – clutch, gear changes assessed
Estimated Training Cost Higher (more lessons, longer training)
Time to Get Licence Longer due to manual training complexity
Drive in Singapore Suitable (98% of cars are automatic) Same – plus sports cars, older vehicles
Drive Overseas Limited in countries with many manuals Full flexibility in all countries
Upgrade to Class 3 Yes – must sit full manual practical test Already Class 3 – no upgrade needed
Popularity Decreasing – chosen by enthusiasts
Bottom line: For most Singaporeans, Class 3C is the right choice. Singapore roads are predominantly automatic, costs are lower, and the test is more straightforward. You can always upgrade to Class 3 later if needed.

Upgrading Your Driving Licence

Foreign Licence Conversion

Holders of valid foreign driving licences may be able to convert to a Singapore licence without sitting all tests from scratch. The process and requirements depend on your country of issue and the type of licence.

Generally, you will need to hold a Provisional Driving Licence (PDL) during the conversion process. Some countries allow direct conversion after a driving record check and an eye test only. Others may require a qualified driving test (QDT) at one of Singapore's Approved Driving Centres.

Always verify with TP: The list of qualifying countries and conversion requirements can change. Check the latest information at trafficpolice.gov.sg or contact an ADC directly before proceeding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Singapore driving licence classes answered.

Yes. A Class 3C licence holder can drive any automatic light motor vehicle (private cars, taxis if licensed, electric vehicles, vans) as long as the vehicle weight is within the class limit. This covers the vast majority of cars on Singapore roads today, including all modern EVs and hybrids that are automatic-only. The restriction is simply that you cannot drive a manual (stick shift / clutch) vehicle.

Yes – you do not need to retake the BTT or FTT theory tests. However, you must enrol at an Approved Driving Centre (ADC) for Class 3 manual practical training and pass the full Class 3 practical driving test. There is no administrative shortcut or simple "upgrade" – the manual gearbox handling must be assessed in a practical test. Your existing theoretical pass is still valid.

No. Singapore's motorcycle licensing system is strictly progressive. You must hold each class for at least one year before applying to upgrade to the next. The order is fixed: Class 2B (minimum 1 year, age 16+) → Class 2A (minimum 1 year, age 18+) → Class 2 (full licence, age 18+). Skipping any level is not permitted. The minimum total time from 2B to full Class 2 is 2 years.

No. Car licences (Classes 3, 3A, 3C, 3CA, 4, 5) and motorcycle licences (Classes 2, 2A, 2B) are entirely separate in Singapore. Holding a Class 3 licence gives you no entitlement to ride any motorcycle, moped or scooter. Conversely, a Class 2B motorcycle licence does not allow you to drive a car. You must hold both separately if you wish to drive both types of vehicle.

The timeline varies by individual, chosen ADC, and how frequently you book lessons. As a general guide:
  • BTT preparation and test: 2–4 weeks of self-study + scheduling
  • FTT preparation and test: Another 2–4 weeks
  • PDL application and practical lessons: Typically 3–6 months (25–35 lessons recommended)
  • Practical driving test: Scheduled after completing mandatory lessons
In total, most students obtain their Class 3C licence within 6 to 12 months from starting the process. Private learners (with their own vehicle and appointed qualified instructor) may complete it faster. Waiting times at ADCs can vary.
